Hutton Settlement

Used for the preservation and storage of fodder, the Silo is a familiar site on a farm.  The earliest or upright tower silos date to the end of the 1880s and they gradually shifted from rectangular to circular form by the end of the century (Allen Noble and Richard Cleek, The Old Barn Book).  Silos possess a variety of shapes, materials and roof types and are slowly losing favor to horizontal storage pits.

Many of the farms listed in Spokane County have a silo and this is by no means a complete list.  It should be pointed out that the brick construction used for the Hutton Settlement silo is exceptionally rare.
