Statement of Significance

The Spokane Sash & Door Company Flats are historically significant for their association with Spokane's development and growth as a regional transportation hub, and architecturally significant as the work of the city's most celebrated architect, Kirtland K. Cutter.  Built during a period when Spokane's population tripled from 36,000 in 1900 to 100,000 in 1910, this building is one of only a few of the twenty-two apartments built in Spokane in 1909 still standing today.  The main building, in true Tudor Revival style, was commissioned by the Spokane Sash and Door Company.  It was designed by nationally renowned architect Kirtland K. Cutter and built in 1909.  This clinker brick building rightfully derives its current name, "The Gables," from the building's multi-gabled rooflines.
