History:

Built around 1955, Howard's Service Station is the second service station to be located on this property. An earlier station occupied the site in the 1930s. Fred W. Wegner, a reaHoward House, 720 N. Cochranl estate agent, purchased the lot in 1905. In 1930, Conway Best, a mechanic for the White Company, purchased the property. By 1935, J. Melvin Sheets owned the property and had opened J. Melvin Sheets Gas Station. In 1952, C. Ward Howard purchased the property and had the existing service station replaced after it was damaged by fire, and additionally built a brick home immediately behind the garage as a residence (720 N. Cochran). By 1955, the current service station was open as Howard's Service Station.

Architectural Description:

Howard's Service Station

This single-story service station has a poured concrete foundation, brick cladding, and built-up flat roof. The front (north) facade features wood sash windows a pair of wood and glass entrance doors. Two large vehicle bay doors also characterize the front facade.
