This building replaced an earlier frame building which was destroyed by fire in
May 1904. It housed the Washington Broom Factory, owned by Gus
Meese, a son of 1849 California gold rush emigrants who made his way to
Spokane via Portland in 1893. When completed, the factory was the
only complete broom factory between Minneapolis and the Pacific
Coast. The structure was one of the first industrial buildings in
Spokane's West Central neighborhood, and is historically significant for
its association with the development of that part of town. The building
has been in continuous use since its construction, having housed various industrial operations such as a machinery company and a pickle company.
Today Northwest Knitting Mill occupies the facility.
